Morning Sun Pigeon Point

14″ x 11″ oil on linen panel

There are a few moments on early fall mornings when the first rays of the sun illuminate the lighthouse at Pigeon Point. The fog lifts and it just glows. As I painted this on location, I gave all my attention to that effect and to the way the glow carried as a reflection on the ocean’s surface. I deliberately kept the vegetation on the foreground bluff loose to ensure the distant glow was the star of the show.

Bonaire Dive Boat

9″ x 12″ oil on linen panel

What fun painting this plein air piece in the Harbour Village Marina in Kralendijk Bonaire. The unwashed ochre building are such a nice foil for the Caribbean blues.

Cliffside Cypress

8″ x 6″ oil on linen panel

In this piece, I’m capturing a cypress as it clings to the absolute edge a cliff at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. This is a magical area just north of Half Moon Bay with amazing coastal vistas, a moody cypress forest, tide-pools and a beach where seals hang out and pups are born.

My Paintings Find a Home at La Playa Carmel

I have long appreciated the La Playa Hotel in Carmel for its historic feel, beautiful gardens, swimming pool and ocean views. I love it even more now with three of my small paintings hanging in the entry salons.

My paintings “Standing Watch “ and “What Remains” are in the reception foyer. “Pocket Cove” hangs alongside an Alice Weil still life in the fireplace lobby area.

The paintings were acquired as part of a $15 million hotel wide renovation lead by the Post Company. The beautiful renovation respects the historic nature of the hotel and delivers an elegant calm. The project was recently profiled in New York Times’ T Magazine.

The property began as the stone home of painter Chris Jorgensen in Carmel’s early days becoming a hotel 101 years ago.

Harbour Queen

8″ x 10″ (private collection)

I painted this dive boat from the Harbour Village Resort on while I was vacationing in Bonaire. I really enjoyed the way the blues of the water played off of the orange tones of the cluster of hotel buildings in the background.

A gentleman and his family who was also visiting saw me as I was painting. This piece was their favorite from the my time in Bonaire. I have since varnished and framed “Harbour Queen” and sent it to its new home in the Netherlands. What a great memory for their family and for me.

Crab Season

14″ x 18″ oil on linen panel

In Northern California we don’t have snow to signal the arrival of the winter holiday season but we do have Dungeness crab. In this piece, I am celebrating crab season at Half Moon Bay’s Pillar Point Harbor. I love the way the sun as it lowers hits the crab bins along with all the activity as boats head in and out and unload their catch. The boat on the right is the Miss Moriah which I’ve already painted several times.
