Filoli Foxgloves

11″ x 14″ oil on linen panel

When visiting Filoli, there are a number of specific vignettes that I look forward to seeing as the seasons and plantings change. I have loved seeing this walkway lined with tulips and terra cotta pots full of hyacinths. If I had to choose though it would be the scene I’ve captured here with a multitude of foxgloves in the raking light of a sunny afternoon in early summer.

Sailing Lessons

18″ x 24″ oil on linen panel

While painting a Santa Cruz Harbor scene, I was charmed by this procession of student sailors which. I used the plein air painting I did that day as a study for this studio painting.

Montalvo Temple

9″ x 12″ oil (sold)

Each time I find myself in the Italian Garden of Villa Montalvo I overhear a conversation about a wedding. A wedding being planned. A wedding remembered. In any case, it’s a fitting conversation at the Temple of Love.

Have a Seat

11″ x 14″ oil on linen panel

In this piece, I’m trying to catch the way my neighbor’s wicker chairs glow in the late afternoon light. Looking at the painting, the chairs with their comfy pillows seem to be in conversation and offer an invitation.

Filoli Opuntia

11″ x 14″ (sold)

The sunken garden area at Filoli in Woodside has been converted to feature succulent plants and cacti and they’ve pulled it together beautifully. It was fun painting the opuntia (prickly pear). The pink flowers are calandrinia. I scratched their stems in rather than painting them which seems to work well in this context. This painting won second place as part of the Coastal Arts League annual painting show in Half Moon Bay.
